Frequently asked questions

If you can't find the answer to your question here, please contact us at: mail@dccw.de

1. Under what conditions can I take part in the competition?

Students and pupils can officially take part. Please register with an official university email address. Degree programme and semester do not matter. Students without an official email address should contact mail@dccw.de. Only official participants will appear on the scoreboard and can win prizes. However, participation out of competition is open to everyone.

2. When can I register?

Registration is now open. Registration is now possible at any time, even during the event.

3. Until when can I register?

You can still register after the official start of the competition, but you will then have less time to complete the challenges.

4. Does participation cost anything?

No. Participation is completely free of charge.

5. Can I get ECTS points for participating in the DCCW?

Yes, if you are studying for a Bachelor's degree in Würzburg. As part of the ASQ, you can register for the module "Additional qualification MINT 3". To pass, 60 points are sufficient. At the end of the competition, we also need an email from you with the following wording: "I hereby declare on my honour that I have written this thesis independently and have not used any sources or aids other than those I have specified. I have clearly labelled any content I have used." Please make a note of all the sources you have used. Internet, books etc. are allowed - exchange with fellow students is not. All those from whom we have received this email by 4 April and who have passed will be registered.

6. Are the challenges already visible?

Yes, they are visible because the competition has begun.

7. Are all challenges visible from the start?

No. When the competition starts, most of the challenges will be put online immediately. From Tuesday to Thursday, 2-4 more challenges may be added. Irrespective of this, some challenges will only be activated once another challenge has been solved. If this is the case for a challenge, this will be explicitly stated as information.

8. Do all challenges give the same number of points?

No. You can see how many points a challenge gives by the number in the overview and in the description at the top. We have tried to award points according to difficulty. In this respect, more difficult challenges tend to give more points. However, this is very subjective and what is easy for some is difficult for others. In this respect, this only serves as a guide. Another point of reference is the number of participants who have already solved a task. If a task remains unsolved for a very long time, we may increase the points. However, we will announce this on a case-by-case basis and as soon as a task has been solved for the first time, the points will no longer be changed.

9. Who wins in the event of a tie?

If several participants have the same number of points at the end, the time at which the last challenge was solved decides the ranking. The winner is the one who reaches the final score earlier.

10. How do the hints work?

Hints are provided for some tasks. These are intended to help you solve the task more easily. To see a hint you have to pay with points. How many points are required is indicated in each case, usually 1 or 2. There is no guarantee that a hint will really help in the individual situation, it may only explain a first step that has already been completed anyway. Attention! Displaying a tip costs points even if the challenge is not solved.

11. how can I get involved as a partner company?

Es gibt verschiedene Möglichkeiten zu einem erfolgreichen Event beizutragen. There are various ways to contribute to a successful event. You can contribute your own challenges with realistic data sets and questions. You can show your support by presenting yourself on the partner page and taking part in the award ceremony.

12. Who created the beautiful illustration?

The illustration on the start page is by Sonja Feitsch.

13. Data protection

We store the data for the purpose of this competition. No data will be passed on to third parties. Only in the event that you explicitly agree to this by confirming the "Contact me" option in your profile will your stored e-mail address be passed on to listed partners. You can withdraw this authorisation at any time. Further information on general data protection can be found here.

14. Can I see my ranking during the competition?

Partially. The scoreboard is hidden most of the time. However, we will post the intermediate score at certain times. From Saturday 16 March, the scoreboard will be permanently visible. Participants who play out of competition will be hidden. However, they may appear for a short time. The official final score will be announced at the end of the competition after the winners' eligibility has been verified.

15. Can others see my ranking?

During the competition only to a limited extent (see previous question). After the competition: yes. The competition website with the final scoreboard will remain online. It is therefore possible to brag about the result.

16. How can I get in touch with participants and partners?

There is a Slack channel that is open to all participants. There you can network, exchange ideas, ask questions (without spoilers) and also discuss solutions (as soon as you have solved a challenge yourself or the competition is over). It's best to use the same e-mail address there, as this makes it easier to assign you to the channels.

17. Will I miss anything if I don't join the Slack channel?

No, at least not any important organisational information. These are always posted as notifications here on the site and listed in the FAQ. But it is a great opportunity to get in touch with each other.

18. When will the award ceremony take place?

The award ceremony will take place on 21 March at 16:30.

19. What does flag mean?

A flag here on the site is the solution to a task.
